With her usual skill, Genoveva introduces her treatise with historic tones: ‘The truth, unfortunately, is that mild mannered, regular people really made the best Nazis. They obeyed laws. They didn’t question authority. They didn’t rock the boat, lest attention be drawn to themselves…Twenty years after the Nazis were defeated, a similar dynamic was at play at a micro scale in the basement of an Indiana home. We see a woman, Gertrude Baniszewski, filled with hatred after a lifetime of hardship. We also se an innocent teenage girl she blamed all her problems on. Through ways that are still difficult to understand, Gertrude became a ringleader of torture against Sylvia Likens, rallying together a small army of neighborhood children. This book will explore the life of a woman behind one of America’s most notorious child abuse cases and attempt to make sense of her horrifically senseless crime.’
Covering the details of Gertrude’s abusive childhood, unfortunate three marriages, divorces, seven children and multiple miscarriages, marital physical abuse, poverty - all factors that fed into the mental illness of depression etc that eventually led to the crime described here. ‘Many people in the neighborhood pitied the emaciated, sickly-looking woman with her rambunctious brood of seven.’ She meets the Likens family through her daughter and takes Sylvia Likens in when the Likens family dissolved. And there begins the horrendous crime, related in detail – a terrifying survey of extreme child abuse.
This new series – True Crime Explicit – expands the purview of crime novels by the True Crime Seven, terrifying facts related in a manner that allows the reader to enter the minds of the perpetrators. Grady Harp, February 22
I would liked to have to read more details of the children and participants in the household via interviews. Not assumptions and the author asking the same questions as the reader. Could have been longer.
