Minimal insight into the perpetrators life or mind. This book covers the most basic facts of the case but nothing more. The author fails to give any real indication of the state of mind of Berdella or any real indication of his motivation or triggers. There is no further mention of the poor victim, Chris Bryson, who escaped from Berdella once he'd spoken to the police either; leaving readers feeling that to the author he was unimportant and that, having been a sex worker (which is reiterated unnecessarily), was somehow worthless and unworthy of being credited with the capture of a serial killer; who knows how many lives Chris saved by escaping and going to the police? Berdella could have continued for years had Chris not jumped from the window. Let's face it the police didn't even appear to be aware that these men were missing to even consider that one murder had taken place let alone six!
I feel this lack of information and consideration seriously undermines the consequences of Chris's experiences, his traumatic treatment at Berdella's hands and his determination to survive and escape. I hope that he got the help he needed to turn his life around and live in safety, and as much happiness as possible, after such a terrible experience.
