I use this product to connect to router with ethernet cables so I don't have to use wifi to connect to the internet for my main pc. Wifi is so flaky and is not dependable at all. When I can use ethernet, I will use it over Wifi, when I am able to do so. Our setup with our cable company gave us their best router with two boosters for our home, and the Wifi works one minute, but not the next, and is absolutely not dependable. Since there was no solution to the problem, enter Ethernet Cat 8 cables. Time to stop messing around. The switch box with 5 ports hooks me up to a desktop pc, streaming box, and two laptops. No problems.
Ordered this in the 8 port, unmanaged config (GS308) on December 27, 2019. Works great with no configuration needed. It's literally plug and play, however, over the course of ownership there have been slight problems where a single port would not have internet connection while the other ones worked fine. This is usually fixed by just moving the port over to another one. This could be from a dusty port from sitting on the ground 24/7, but as of March 22, 2022, I will be looking for a different switch as it's frustrating when my home server is down a few times every year due to a faulty switch.
We recently purchased a UHD TV and obtained a subscription to Amazon Prime. We noticed we were having problems from time to time accessing Prime. The problem is usually an error message about the connectivity with the internet. We then tried Netflix and YouTube and found no issues with the access. Amazon Prime website indicated for UHD, the download rate must be 15 Mbps. Therefore I switched to the Netgear Gigabyte Switch, replacing my 13 year old D-Link Gigabyte Switch. Now I have no issues with Amazon Prime and in addition the level of detail seen in the picture is awesome.
I have a few of these running in the house in 5, 8 and 16 port varieties. They have not failed or have had any issues in months. Most have not been power cycled in that entire time. There is a mix of 10, 100, and 1000BASE-T devices on the network running VoIP, media, and access points. Mix of cabling with most CAT6, some CAT5E.
I like the metal case as it's sturdy and likely helps keep more interference out.
Good residential/light commercial product. No issues.
I recently bumped my internet up to 500mbps and this switch is only giving me ~90mbps speeds. If I remove the switch my speed goes up. Odd since the switch promises gigabit speeds. Maybe I have a defective one, but calling in for support is a nightmare. Went through 3 departments and 30min and then the call dropped and they didn't call me back.
Don’t buy this. Settle for something better. I bought this to move my gaming station to my basement since my router is in my homes main level. I run one Cat8 cable to the switch in my basement, then run a Cat8 to my ps5 and TV from the switch. I cannot get a stable connection, I pay for 300Mbps download, I’m lucky to get 60mbps from the switch. My PS5 can’t run online games because of the connection and if I do, I’m disconnected multiple times. But if I plug an Ethernet cable directly from my router to my ps5, I get the full speed & have zero issues whatsoever. You get what you pay for I guess.
TL/DR: difficult to get any proper connection on ps5 or smart tv. Constantly get disconnected. Do not buy.
It's built strong, it's compact and silent and sooo inexpensive. I didn't think a lot about what I was going to have to setup for it to work in my network... I plugged everything in and there you go, everything works. I have a couple of devices for which I need an assigned IP address so I leaved them plugged directly to the router, but for my computer, apple tv, smart tv etc. it works perfect. The connection is fast, stable and reliable.
My honest review I like Netgear I like their stuff I like what they sell right but this time for the 1st time I got a product that literally made me speechless. (I would recommend to watch my video attached to this review). So u can understand what I'm talking about, also I'm going to return this 1 and buy another from best buy.
Grabbed a good deal on prime day. (price has jumped since) And pleasantly surpised to see the unit that was shipped has LEDS that glow yellow on 10/100, and green on gigabit connections. Not a big deal for most of us who never look at a swich after it's installed, but helpful if you need to troubleshoot a network problem. Many posts warning that netgear's support sucks the big one, but since I will only contact them for a warranty issue, I'll see what happens if that is ever needed.
This switch is a lifesaver for field service. Often I find I have to connect to a remote device in a cabinet without a switch. Simply pair this switch with a USB power cable and a HOOTOO wireless router, plug everything in, and you're online and working without dragging cables through the mud.
Solid build, reliable, and literally everything you could want from a portable 5 port switch. Get one!
