Read the bad reviews. These things seem to have some manufacturing issues. Specifically, the spring over the point seems a bit weak and the things arrive internally dirty with a poor internal finish on parts that slide. However, it's easily repairable and just using the unit to break it in will help a lot. Here's how to get it going again.
Unscrew the point end and carefully remove the pin, spring and point. Make sure to notice how things are laid out. Clean each component, remove any debris, clean the threads, Use a good lubricant on everything. I like using a dry Teflon type that won't attract dust and dirt.
Next, unscrew the top. Careful as there is a spring in there. Now you have to remove the slid inside the top half. Just push it out the top. I used a can of compressed air to blow it out, but a small paper clip would also work I believe. Clean it and the tube. Q-tips are your friend here. Lubricate as above and reassemble. And use it. Wear it in. You'll have to play with the point end adjustment a little, just unscrew half a turn and put back. It'll get smoother and more reliable.
Note that on the point end, the point drops in first, then the pin (flat side toward point) and the spring goes on the pin. The smaller end of the spring goes onto the pin first.
Kind of disappointed in this. I was expecting more from Starrett. When it works, it works well, but it often jams and refuses to "reset" forcing you to unscrew it to get it to work again. C'mon Starrett! You can do better than that!
The quality is 100% Starrett, but I thought I was getting a bigger punch similar to the #18-B which is 5" long x 3/4" Diameter and has a pretty strong punch. But this punch is great for preliminary layout work for just light punches. It is only 3-3/4" long and about 3/8" Diameter. Quality is great. Just not the size of punch I was wanting, but still useful.
As with most Starrett instruments, the build quality is amazing. The knurling, the ground surfaces, super cool. Got this punch for its size, both frame and light spring. Works wonders on aluminum, but beware spring force for heavier metals maybe a little weak. 5 stars for the product. 1 star for Amazon posting a picture of a replaceable(screw off) tip model, mine has a standard tip(one piece from punching tip to intermediate pin landing), not screw off tip.
