I bought this saw because it was within my budget and I needed a larger Japanese saw than my little 6”. I suspect, but I do not know for sure, that spending a few more bucks would increase the quality of the saw — specifically the tooth sharpness. Don’t get me wrong, it will cut! However, it doesn’t glide through wood like my much smaller Japanese saw that cost the same price as this one. Anyway, I don’t want to dissuade you from purchasing this saw if you’re on a budget because you won’t be disappointed — it’s a great saw.
Excellent saw. Well balanced and very sharp. I've replaced ALL my Western-style saws with pull saws, finding them much much easier to use and to keep a straight line. If you do string instrument work, railroad modeling, or other delicate work, saws like this can't be beat. I used this one to cut a 1/4' thick piece of wood into equal slices and they came out perfect...and I know I'm not that skilled! Try one of these and you'll wonder why you ever pushed a saw versus pulling it ever again.
Bought this saw to help me with installing interior window frame and sills. Practicing now on different cuts using instruction from YouTube. I have the time now to learn how to use a new tool which should provide me with the skills to make my projects easier.
I'm a custom woodworker and have nearly every kind of woodworking tool available. But I still do my precision cuts with hand tools and these are among the best I've use or owned. I do use several styles of these Gyocucho saws, each for specific uses but each is amazingly sharp, very well made and cut straight and super clean.
