One irritation of cheap roller frames is finding the sleeve sliding off, and having to stop to push it back on. This frame from Purdy claims 'no sleeve roll off'. I have no doubt that this claim is true. The unfortunate consequence of how well the frame grips the sleeve, is that I have had a number of wrestling matches trying to persuade the sleeve to separate from the frame when I have finished using it. It isn’t particularly easy to get the Purdy sleeves onto the frame, either.
At the same time I purchased this Purdy frame, I also purchased a 9" Wooster frame - and that is the one which I am constantly reaching for. Purdy also claim that their frame is easier to clean. Here I would be happy to concede that it is easier to clean than the Wooster frame. It is also lighter. But, on balance, it is the Wooster frame which is the one getting used.
I purchased this with the Purdy Marathon sleeve which I subsequently found didn't fit. I bought that sleeve as it came up in the 'frequently bought with' section with the frame. I see that numerous other people hit the same problem, and others say that the Marathon sleeve fits perfectly so possibly the Marathon sleeve comes in a couple of different core diameters. I later found other sleeves by another manufacturer that fit fine e.g. Harris tiger stripe 9" x 1.75", so I think that this is probably going to work out ok. Just be careful you don't waste money on buying the wrong size of sleeve as I did.
These are great to start with, but after six (ish) months of regular use, they've all broken. The sleeve is completely plastic which caused them to snap closest to the metal section. I've used these on hard rendered surfaces so o I imagine I gave them a good test.
quite a bit lighter than my old frame which has steel neck and steel frame assembly, but the purdy isn't sturdy enough, the neck seems to be some hollow alloy which flexes, the plastic frame worries me and may not stand up to much usage
Oops. Fits 1-3/4” roller covers. This is the first time I’ve ever realized there are different diameter rolls and handles, I’ve always just bought a bunch of paint rolls and a roller and got painting. Never bought the wrong roll or roller before so I’ll probably never find a roll thatll fit this thing so I’ll just throw it out.
