Had to return this item. So many positive reviews that the necessary piece of information was lost in the shuffle. So let me be crystal clear. THIS MODEL HAS NO SMART FEATURES *unless* you already own a smart hub or purchase a smart hub for an additional ~$100. Without the hub (smarthings or winkz or other addon kit) it is just a keypad lock. It's a darned good keypad lock. Well constructed and seemed easy enough for installation. But as a keypad lock it is very, very expensive...so not a good value. If you want: door autolock and unlock, ability to unlock through an app etc. then you should not buy this model unless you already have the necessary accessories.
I was looking for a smart lock allowing to program access codes remotely. The fact that Yale products were associated to Google with Nest lock, that this product is tagged "Amazon Choice", and the fact that this product can connect to Smartthing gave the impression that it was a competitive smart lock. It is not. This product allows you to enter manually 250 different code entries from the digital panel of the lock, but absolutely no management of these codes is allowed remotely. In terms of Smartthing capability, the only things it allows it is an "unlock" button. Basically, buy this product if the only goal you were aiming was to not have to reach anymore your pocket for your key. At best, it only replaces your physical key, just as any electrical locks sale to a quarter of this price. If you are looking for a smart lock to control and monitor access to your residence, don't buy this product.
These locks are total crap. First I tried buying the HomeKit one. Never could get it working, as it's not actually HomeKit, but has to use this special Yale app. Go check Yale Secure in the app store, it has a 1.7 star review with every single review saying it's garbage and doesn't work, so I returned it.
I exchanged it for the August one which is just as big a piece of garbage. It works fine when on bluetooth but the Wifi connect module is a total joke. I have it sitting beside the door, there's full wifi, but both say bluetooth signal is too low and so is wifi. I have it on an extension cord right now SITTING ON THE LOCK and it keeps saying you need to move the August connect bridge closer to the lock! So sick of this company, this one is going back now as well. Avoid these, they are total garbage.
So far very pleased with the lock. I had to drill a larger hole in my 30 year old steel door. The old standard Deadbolt hole was 1 3/4" now the standard size is 2 1/8" but the entire job took less than 1 hour. There are some good YouTube videos on how to make the original hole larger that made it an easy task. Fortunately I have an assortment of hole saws so I had the one I needed to do the job. If not, pickup the 2 1/8" hole saw before you start and have some old pieces of plywood ready to make the template for the new larger hole if your have an older door with the 1 3/4" hole like mine was.
Programming was easy to follow. It was easy to connect it to my Z-Wave network and it reports the status of the lock as well as Battery Status which will be helpful in the future once the batteries begin to drop off of in power.
We have this on our front door. It was a bit scary going keyless but after 6 months of use, the lock hasn't failed us yet. It is sleek and stylish. It is also very responsive to touch. This was a replacement for a competitors product and I can enter an 8 digit code on this look in less time than it took to enter a 4 digit code on the other. I also love the capability to integrate with home automation systems.
Lost my love for August and having to pull out our phones every time we leave the house and then a few moments later when we forgot something. My son without a cell phone love the independence of being able to use his own code. My wife and daughter really appreciate the ability to use codes when their phones are dead. I really love how easy it was to join the Z-Wave radio with my Hubitat hub and integrate it to a level I wasn't ever able to reliably to with my August lock via cloud and could never do with my now useless Okidokeys lock that never produced their WiFi adapter before being sold to Somfy and screwing every US and Canada owner.
I've used a number of keypad locks over the years and a couple of smart home locks. This lock is well built and responsive, it is designed to fit a couple of different deadbolt hole sizes/positions (two most common north american standards) and comes with a good installation guide (read it). I had no problems installing, although the deadbolt resizes for "deeper" holes and how it does that looked a little odd at first (it looked like the deadbolt was retracting too far) until I understood how it worked. The z-wave function was easy to install and setup and I have mine paired with a Samsung SmartThings Hub v3 with no issues and now incorporated into a lot of routines with door sensors and proximity sensors. Setting codes is straight forward. I find the keypad a little odd since it is a flat surface and needs to be "palm" touched before lighting up and activating, but once you get used to it you are fine. It does NOT have number randomization, so a lock that gets heavy use may eventually show the key code numbers through wear on the display, but for a garage lock like I am using it this isn't really a concern for me. I'm quite happy with the look and build quality.
