Let me start by saying I am an IT consultant so fairly comfortable with tech. I wasted 2 hours setting this up and troubleshooting it. It would start up trigger the software to open then say it couldn't find the computer it had just triggered software on. I could get it to work for one or two scans then seemingly the o ly way to get another scan was to reinstall. From startup to scan also took nearly two mins, when it worked. Why are scanners and printers for some manufacturers in 2019 still not a simple install and reliable?!

In the web settings for this scanner, you have the option to set up the scan to network paths. If the profile name you use has an ampersand in it (eg. B & W), it will corrupt the settings xml file. You will not be able to make any further changes, and it cannot be undone through factory reset.

Brother, sanitize your inputs!

As a side note, when I reported this issue to Brother, they wanted to charge me to fix it. Then, they hung up on me. Back to Amazon it went.

The description, and even Brothers website, claims wireless scanning directly to Cloud Services (Google, iCloud, Box, etc). Once I received this devices, I tried to do just that. However, 30 minutes of Brother tech support has proven this feature claim to be a lie.

This device DOES NOT SCAN TO CLOUD SERVICES WIRELESSLY!!

You can, however, scan to their installed software on your computer - then, you can transfer your scanned items to various cloud services. This is completely useless as it requires a computer. Why even offer the functionality if I need my computer to which I could have done it in the first place? ** Returning the scanner today **

This product is not light weight. It is not user friendly when installing. It is not WiFi friendly. The steps/directions all need to be downloaded on your devices and do not provide ease of service. After 2.5hrs and calling tech support, it finally is scanning to my computer. Paper documents are not supported on the “tray” portion of the scanner without utilizing a hand to hold in place. There are no arms or restraints to hold papers/documents on either side so you just have to guess where to place them. There is also no guide in to the scanner, so if papers/documents are slightly sideways that is how the scanner will pull them through. This looks like modern technology 15yrs ago but not today and not for the price. Very disappointed in this purchase and even more disappointed that it has been given high ratings by others.

I purchased this unit through amazon two months ago. Initially I thought the unit was working well. It rarely jams, seems fast, and makes nice scans. Until the unit starting scanning black pages on the first side. After making an inquiry with Brother for service and spending over an hour on the phone going through troubleshooting they decided to escalate the issue to a higher level of technical support. In the mean time the unit started working again, I thought that it had healed. Then it stopped scanning the first side again. After finally speaking to John this morning at Brother, this intermittent issue of first side not scanning is still not resolved.
His solution, which is unacceptable to me, is that we need to wait for it to stop working again. It's happened multiple times now btw. He indicated that only 1 in 100 times of this kind of failure is it intermittent and normally when this failure occurs it's constant. So, he clearly stated that SOMETIMES this failure occurs to me. But RATHER than replace the item in good fashion, he wants me to wait for it and closely monitor every scan that I perform. I'm working to digitize our office and am scanning hundreds of pages per day.
This is mostly disheartening but also eye opening. I thought Brother was a stand-up company that would stand behind their products. Apparently not! Unfortunately they have lost a customer. This partially defunct scanner has now been placed in a cabinet, likely to never see the light of day. I've replaced it with a FUJITSU ScanSnap ix1500.
If you have time to mess around with a machine of questionable quality and poor customer service then you SHOULD buy this machine. If you've got hours to waste and the intention to babysit a device then this is the scanner for you.
If you're like me and likely most other consumers and your time is valuable, I would suggest spending a few more dollars or even the same amount and STAY AWAY FROM BROTHER PRODUCTS. For a manufacturer to boldly deny warranty service is questionable at best.
GOOD BYE BROTHER, HELLO FUJITSU.

Bought the ADS1700W to replace a Fujitsu that was no longer compatible with Apple’s latest Catalina OS. Having good experience with Brother laser printers, I ignored the mixed reviews and bought this unit. What a mistake. Documents frequently feed nowhere near straight no matter how careful I am loading, setup is a guessing game due to poor documentation, software seems like it was developed a decade ago. Unfortunately, I do not recommend this nor the ADS2700W, which I replaced this with, and returned within one day of purchasing due to the same setup and software weaknesses (but it does feed paper straight). Replaced all with a new Fujitsu ix1500, easy to setup and use, with excellent software from a company that clearly is serious about the home document scanner business.

I was hoping to use this as a standalone scanner without a PC to scan directly to Google Drive. It didn't work, and I ended up returning it.

First of all, it does "work" standalone, but really only to scan to a USB drive. It can connect to one Wifi network at a time, but then can only scan over the network to a set of very obscure services (email and FTP servers!) that require you to know a lot to configure them. It won't scan standalone to any cloud service like Dropbox or Google Drive.

Second, it doesn't work with Google Drive at all as of January 2020. When I tried to connect it, Google warned me that "This app has not been verified yet by Google in order to use Google Sign In." Brother support was unable to give me any timeline for when this might be fixed.

I really like my Brother laser printer and was hoping this scanner would work out, but I was sadly disappointed.

This machine will not scan my photos. No matter how I change the settings, it will scan the writing on the back of the photos but not the photograph itself.
I've uninstalled drivers and software and reinstalled them.
There is nothing on Brother's support pages addressing this issue and it is impossible to find a phone number to call them.
It is frustrating to the extent I've spent several hours online, with the machine and software but still cannot remedy this.
Brother is no where to be found on this topic for help.
I purchased this scanner for the sole purpose of scanning in family photos.
Very disappointed.
