My granddaughter loves this book, but it is not bound correctly. All of the pages fell out the first week that she owned it. I can see that there are other similar books, published by the same publisher. I will be hesitant about buying these books for this reason.
This is an outstanding book! Not only were the choices made for the collection thoughtful, but the “hooks” from entry to entry made the chronology of American history flow smoothly and notably. The entries are short enough and so well- written that even reluctant readers will be encouraged to persevere! The interest and reading levels have been perfect for my 9 and 11 yr old granddaughters, but I can see a wide range of ages enjoying it, especially if they have an interest in biographies. Highly recommend.
My 13 y/o daughter has loved the short synopsis of so many great women! It’s been fantastic and has opened the door for deeper research and reading. We love the layout! Absolutely perfect for everyone, but young girls will be inspired.

This book's sweet spot is upper elementary. Kids love biography, and this book doesn't disappoint. The entries are 1-2 pages. Each entry purposefully includes a couple of vocabulary words (thanks, teacher!), but the entry itself is written at a very accessible level for the average upper elementary reader. In other words, your strong 3rd grade reader can read it independently. The vocab words trace to a glossary, though part of me wishes the book took the textbook approach and just defined the words on the page. Not every kid is willing to flip to the back, but those that are will be rewarded with increased vocabulary for reading this book. The other cool text features are a bracket of a timeline, so you can see where the person fits into larger history, plus a sidebar with some historical context. This really helps to understand the person's life, especially when the person is doing something that we would take for granted today but was really trailblazing at the time. In other words, the book is created with care. Sure, we could quibble over which women made the list of 50 and which did not, but you'll see a lot of familiar faces on the list plus some less familiar. There is attention to diversity in the list. As the author points out in the intro, because the biographies are arranged chronologically, you get a historical glimpse of America when you read the book cover to cover. I also love that she points out that even if you disagree with the personal views of some of the women, you'll "find it worthwhile to further investigate her life to find out why she made the choices she did. Learning about opposing viewpoints leads to a more open, educated mind." Amen. Thank you for that message at the outset. Sure, that skirts the politics of who has the power to decide whose biographies get into books and textbooks handed to kids, but it's a start. Why not include a sentence or two about how she arrived at the 50 women she included and maybe even who she feels bad about leaving out. Where's the list of more American women to go explore? I realize that's an endless task, but let's not tell kids to be open-minded and then fail to be transparent with them about the information we give them. Just a quibble. My 9 yr old *LOVES* biography and *EXTRA LOVES* this book. It definitely set her off on a path to go learn more about different women in the book after being introduced. Great gift or addition to the classroom or home library!
